A vertical video is safe to publish only after its important subject, product, captions, disclosure, logo, and call to action remain visible in every selected placement preview. Do not rely on one universal pixel margin: platform controls, ad buttons, captions, product cards, device surfaces, and placement variants can cover different parts of the same 9:16 file.
Use a placement-specific overlay or official preview, test the opening, busiest middle frame, final frame, and every required text moment, then record a pass or a named collision for each destination.
Evidence boundary: this checklist does not claim that a safe-zone pass improves ad performance or guarantees platform approval. Specifications and interface overlays change. Recheck the current destination documentation and the preview available in the account before every release.
Safe area is not the same as aspect ratio
These checks answer different questions:

Google's current video-ad specifications explain that overlays, calls to action, and buttons can appear in different locations by format, campaign type, and screen. TikTok's creative best practices likewise call for vertical creative and keeping content inside the relevant UI safe zone.
Passing “1080 × 1920” is therefore an intake check, not a release verdict.
Start with a Placement Contract
Define where the asset will actually run. “Social” is not a placement.

Create a separate contract when a placement changes the interface. TikTok's Auction In-Feed Ads specification, for example, notes that some anchors use their own safe-zone files. Pinterest publishes different constraints across ad products in its current advertising specifications. The correct question is not “What is the TikTok margin?” but “Which interface will surround this exact asset?”
Map three risk boxes, not one magic rectangle
For each placement overlay, mark three conceptual regions.
1. Identity box
The product, face, demonstration, or other subject that must remain recognizable. It can move, so track it over time rather than checking one poster frame.
2. Meaning box
Open captions, price or offer qualifiers, disclosures, evidence labels, and any text required to understand the message. This box must be readable, not merely technically inside a boundary.
3. Action box
The in-video CTA, pointer, gesture, or visual direction that leads toward the destination action. If the platform supplies its own CTA, confirm that an in-video element does not compete with or sit underneath it.
These boxes can overlap, but none should be placed at an edge simply because the generated composition looks balanced without the destination UI.
For a product ad, the bottle may be the Identity box, an “individual results vary” qualification may be the Meaning box, and an end-card product button may be the Action box. All three need their own evidence.
Build the overlay set from current sources
Do not recreate official templates from an undated screenshot in a blog roundup.
- Record the official destination URL and review date.
- Download or capture the platform's current overlay/template when it provides one.
- Name the file with platform, placement, frame shape, and checked date.
- Preserve it with the project rather than silently replacing it.
- When no official overlay exists, use the in-product placement preview and label the evidence as a preview, not an exact reusable template.
- If neither exists, use a conservative internal guide, flag the uncertainty, and require a live device check before release.
YouTube Shorts ads can surface across mobile, desktop, tablet, connected devices, and several entry points, according to Google's current Shorts ads guide. That is one reason a single phone screenshot cannot certify every surface.
Avoid publishing a cross-platform table of supposedly permanent pixel margins. A precise but stale number is more dangerous than a documented requirement to open the current preview.
Run the four-pass Overlay Preflight
Apply the selected overlay or destination preview to the final encoded file, not an earlier storyboard.
Pass 1: opening recognition
Review the first displayed frame and the first two seconds.
- Is the required subject visible before controls or captions appear?
- Does a platform-supplied label cover a product feature?
- Is any critical opening text already clipped or crowded?
- If the platform chooses or modifies a cover, does the fallback frame still identify the asset?
Pass 2: motion envelope
Scrub through the entire clip and trace the furthest edge reached by every required subject.
- Does a moving face, hand, package, or demonstration enter a control rail?
- Does camera motion push the product outside the intended crop?
- Does reframing from a horizontal source create an edge collision midway through the shot?
- Does generated motion change the product while it passes behind an overlay?
Record the first failed timecode. “Product too close to edge” is less useful than “00:04.8 — pump enters the right-side action rail.”
Pass 3: meaning and accessibility
Check every caption and required text moment at normal playback and paused.
- Are words accurate and synchronized with the audio?
- Are necessary non-speech sounds represented when captions carry meaning?
- Does each line remain readable over the moving background?
- Do open captions avoid platform controls, product features, and disclosure text?
- If closed captions are uploaded separately, does the destination position them differently from the editing preview?
W3C WAI's caption guidance defines captions as synchronized text for speech and necessary non-speech audio and warns that automatic captions need accuracy review. That is a content requirement. Safe-zone review adds a separate visual question: can viewers actually read the caption where the platform renders or where the editor burned it in?
Pass 4: end card and action
Pause the final action state with every expected platform control visible.
- Are the logo and product still recognizable?
- Is a required offer qualification present for as long as policy or legal review requires?
- Does the in-video CTA conflict with the platform CTA?
- Does a loop create an accidental flash or cut off the final word?
- Does the thumbnail or end frame imply an accessory, quantity, or claim absent from the landing page?
The end card should survive both the placement UI and the transition out of the ad. It is not safe merely because it looked centered in the editor.
Record collisions instead of nudging blindly
Use one row per defect.

LinkedIn's current video-ad specification accepts multiple horizontal, square, and vertical ratios and lists separate file, caption, and thumbnail requirements. Use the selected placement contract to decide whether the fix is a new export, a layout change, or a different asset—not an undocumented global shift.
Never repair a collision by dragging every element toward the center. A smaller safe composition can still fail if the product becomes unreadable, captions cover the demonstration, or disclosure text is too small.
Decide when one master is not enough
Release one common export only when it passes the actual previews for every selected destination without shrinking meaning or weakening the product presentation.
Create placement-specific versions when:
- UI controls occupy materially different zones;
- one platform adds a product card, anchor, or CTA treatment;
- closed-caption rendering differs from the open-caption master;
- an important action occurs at the edge of the common crop;
- one destination needs a different aspect ratio, duration, thumbnail, or end card;
- a required disclosure cannot remain legible in the shared layout.
The goal is not maximum asset count. It is the smallest set of exports that can be verified honestly.
Use a suffix that identifies the destination decision:

Attach the overlay or preview capture, checked date, reviewer, and pass state to each export.
Keep safe-zone instructions upstream
If a generated shot repeatedly puts the product against an unsafe edge, treat composition as an upstream requirement.
For the next run:
- preserve the approved subject and action;
- specify where the subject must remain through the whole motion;
- reduce camera travel when it creates edge risk;
- reserve clean space for open captions or approved post-production text;
- generate a clean plate when exact copy must be placed later;
- keep the placement contract and failed timecode with the retry.
Do not try to solve an exact overlay collision with adjectives such as “balanced” or “social-ready.” Define the visible state. If the tool exposes aspect ratio or composition controls separately from the prompt, use those controls and record them.
